Women’s Health & Mental Well-Being: 10 Lasting Tips for High-Performing Breast Cancer Survivors

Introduction

As we mark the end of Women’s Health Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on our journeys and look forward with renewed hope and purpose. For high-performing breast cancer survivors, this period underscores the importance of holistic well-being. Surviving breast cancer is a monumental achievement, but thriving beyond it requires continuous attention to both physical and mental health. Today, I want to highlight 10 lasting tips that I pulled from some of the previous articles this month that can guide us throughout the year, ensuring we live our ideal lives with renewed joy and radiating fulfillment.

  1.      Prioritize Self-Care

If I have said it once, I have emphasized this a thousand times: self-care is not a luxury - it’s a necessity. Integrating self-care into our daily routine can significantly enhance our quality of life. Simple acts like taking a relaxing bath, enjoying a hobby, or dedicating time to read a good book can provide much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Self-care helps recharge our batteries, making us more productive and happier.

2.      Stay Connected

I had the wonderful privilege to visit my parents, who live in another state, over the holiday weekend.  I am blessed still to have them in my life. Even though I only get to see them twice a year because of schedules, my mommy duties, doctor appointments (mine and theirs) and other responsibilities, I make it a point to talk to them almost every day (and sometimes, multiple times a day). Hence, it was crucial to include maintaining strong connections with family, friends, and fellow survivors in today’s article. Social interactions provide emotional support, reduce feelings of isolation, and enhance mental well-being. Regularly schedule catch-ups, whether in person, over the phone, or via video calls. These connections remind us that we are not alone in our journey and provide a vital network of support and encouragement.

3.      Engage in Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health. Sometimes restrictions from surgeries or other medical constraints can impede extensive or regular “gym-level” exercises. However, we can do our best to find an enjoyable routine with light exercises, whether it’s yoga, walking, dancing, bike riding or swimming. Exercise releases endorphins, which boost our mood and help reduce stress. Additionally, staying active can help manage the side effects of treatment and improve overall physical health.

*Please consult with your medical professional team for choices tailored to your needs.

4.      Mindfulness and Meditation

Incorporating mindfulness and meditation into our routine can significantly enhance our mental clarity and emotional stability. Practices such as deep breathing, guided meditation, or mindfulness exercises can help manage stress and anxiety. These practices allow us to stay grounded, focus on the present moment, and maintain a calm and balanced mind.

5.      Balanced Nutrition

Eating a balanced diet is vital for overall health and well-being. Focus on nutrient-dense foods that nourish our body and support recovery. Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into meals. If this is a culture shock to your taste buds, try integrating one healthy choice per day, such as grabbing an apple or carrot for a snack, instead of that Reese’s cup. (Ok, maybe that’s just my naughty nemesis!) Staying hydrated is equally important, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

*Again, make sure to speak with your medical professional team to discuss your individual needs.

6.      Regular Check-Ups

Continuing with regular medical check-ups and screenings is essential for us to monitoring our health post-treatment. Keep up with appointments and follow our healthcare provider’s recommendations. Early detection of any issues can lead to better outcomes and provide peace of mind.

7.      Pursue Passion Projects

Engaging in activities that ignite passion can be incredibly fulfilling. Whether it’s a creative endeavor, volunteering, or pursuing a new skill, finding something exciting can provide a sense of purpose and joy. I have taken up Chinese and enrolled in virtual private tutoring to go deeper into my learning. I love languages in general and wanted to learn Chinese to encourage my daughter, who has been taking Chinese.

Passion projects offer a meaningful way to channel our energy and create positive distractions. Following a devastating experience from March 23, 2023, to August of the same year, I decided to transform that date into a celebration. Exactly one year later, on March 23, 2024, I launched the annual “Celebration, Elevation, Transformation” Brunch for breast cancer survivors and their supporters. This event was designed to empower high-performing female breast cancer survivors, celebrating their strength and the unwavering support they received throughout their journey. Through this annual brunch, we honor survivorship and the cherished individuals who stood by us every step of the way.

8.      Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries is key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It’s important to know our limits and communicate them clearly to those around us. This helps prevent burnout and ensures that we have enough time and energy to focus on our health and personal well-being.

9.      Seek Professional Support

There’s no shame in seeking professional support when needed. Whether it’s a therapist, counselor, or support group, professional guidance can provide valuable insights and coping strategies. Mental health professionals can help navigate complex emotions and challenges, offering a safe space to express and work through your feelings.

10.  Practice Gratitude

Cultivating a sense of gratitude can transform our outlook on life. Take time each day to reflect on the positive aspects of our life and acknowledge what we are thankful for. This practice can shift our focus from what we lack to what we have, fostering a more positive and optimistic mindset.

Conclusion

As we close Women’s Health Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s carry forward the lessons and insights we’ve gained. Thriving after breast cancer is a continuous journey that requires ongoing attention to both physical and mental health. By prioritizing self-care, staying connected, engaging in physical activity, practicing mindfulness, maintaining a balanced diet, keeping up with medical check-ups, pursuing passion projects, setting boundaries, seeking professional support, and practicing gratitude, we can create a fulfilling and vibrant life.

As high-performing breast cancer survivors, our experiences have shaped us into individuals who value every moment and strive for excellence in all we do.
